Xavier Montes (founder of the De Colores Art Show) Visual Artist (exhibiting paintings) and musical performer

Xavier (Big X) Montes, Santa Paula's 2004 Citizen of the Year and recipient of Santa Paula Latino Town Hall's 2004 Cultural Arts Award, is the founder and curator of the De Colores Art Show. In the early 1990s, Xavier held his first two shows in Santa Barbara. In 1994, he moved the show to Santa Paula, a one-day event, at the Santa Paula Train Depot. For the next twelve years, the show grew from a one-day event to six-week art show with a Festival that brought thousands to Santa Paula to enjoy beautiful art, vibrant music and dance performances. This year, the show has moved once again, this time to Ventura where it will be held at the Bell Arts Factory on the Avenue.

Xavier was born and raised in Santa Paula and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a BA in studio art, as well as a teaching credential. In the past 25 years, his profession and vocation as an artist has manifested in several overlapping areas: namely as a practicing visual artist (acrylics), as an educator that includes community activism, and as a musician (folk harp, guitar, and vocals).

This year Xavier began to work with ceramics. He will be exhibiting two pieces from his first batch of work. For more information about Xavier's art and music, visit his web site at www.XavierMontes.com.
