Anna Rios Bermudez spent the first 14 years of her life in Fillmore. In 1968 she moved to Ventura where her parents scrimped and saved to send her to Catholic school. After high school, she attended Scripps College in Claremont, California as a music performance major and graduated in 1976. Realizing that the rigorous life of the concert pianist was not for her, she considered art as a possible major. Never having taken an art class and unsure of her abilities, she settled on Art History and Spanish. After Scripps, she went on to San Jose State College for her graduate work. While at Scripps, Anna took summer courses in art history at UCLA and Stanford. She came to enjoy her time in the Bay area subsequently graduating from San Jose State University with a major in Spanish. She eventually returned to Ventura County to teach middle school. In her spare time she collected interesting fabrics and threads and learned basic sewing skills from her mother Anna is an emerging artist specializing in "rebozos that make a statement." She uses velvet that is embossed with different designs as her canvas adding beads made from drilled pinto, garbanzo, red, black and lima beans as embellishment along with seed beads, silver, copper mesh, wire, rose thorns and other found or natural objects. She pays homage to the laborer finding her inspiration in her late father, Enrique Rios, who worked the fields and citrus groves of Ventura County and from her mother who spent decades cleaning houses in order to provide her daughter with a good education. |
