Fandango (pronounced fawn-dawn-go) has two definitions: it is an ancient Spanish dance, probably of Moorish origin,
that came into Europe in the 17th century. The dance is in triple time and is danced by a single couple to the
accompaniment of castanets, guitar, and songs sung by the dancers. At the end of certain measures, the music halts
abruptly and the dancers remain rigid until it is resumed.
A second definition is that it is a baile (dance) that was created by Tejanos (Texans), under the oppressive rule of Spanish
colonial authorities. It was a space for Raza enduring the harsh realities of the northern frontera (border) to enjoy life
and celebrate their cultura. Spanish authorities deemed these events improper and shady. To the gente (people)
planning and attending the bailes, fandangos were a space for pride, celebration, and enjoyment.
In Mexico a fandango is a jam session of jarocho musicians, who jam together playing off each other. Jarocho music
is the music of Veracruz, a region in East Mexico. However there are also, fandango musicales, which implies that a
variety of music will be performed. That is what you will enjoy in Santa Paula on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend,
September 6, 2009 from 1 to 7 pm. Xavier Montes, founder and curator of the De Colores Art Show, will be bringing back
the fandango to Santa Paula for the 4th time.
This years program has been finalized and is listed above. Coming again to Santa Paula is Conjunto Hueyapan de la Familia Herrera. These internationally reknown musicians have performed in Mexico and in the U.S. Also performing is Violeta Quintero y Sus Sueños de Oro. Ms. Quintero works in a
senior center in Mission Hills for the past four years has organized a conjunto of over 30 musicians, all senior citizens. As the maestro, Ms. Quintero has taught these seniors how to play the harp, guitar, requinto and jarana, the instruments used to play son jarocho. The talent and enthusiasm of these musicians, most of who did not play an instrument four years ago will inspire and entertain.
Please mark your calendar and join us on Sunday, September 6, from 1 to 7 pm in Santa Paula at the Railroad Plaza Gazebo, between 10th (Hwy 150) and Santa Barbara Streets.
